Software Metadata Extraction and Curation Software (SMECS)

Software Metadata Extraction and Curation Software (SMECS)

Researchers can extract, curate, and export research software metadata through SMECS

Description

The Software Metadata Extraction and Curation Software (SMECS) is an early-state service which supports researchers in the creation of metadata for their research software. From a user perspective, SMECS allows the extraction of existing research software metadata and their user-friendly editing. It allows researchers to efficiently create high-quality metadata without reentering information already available elsewhere. From a technical perspective, SMECS facilitates the extraction of research software metadata from GitHub and GitLab repositories. SMECS supports the use of CodeMeta and ERSmeta, thus being tailored to our community. The curated metadata can be exported as JSON, ensuring integration with other tools and enhancing the discoverability, reuse, and impact of research software. In future development, we aim to include additional sources for metadata harvesting, expand support for import and export methods, and introduce features that enhance the overall user experience.
